I purchased the widely recommended Plugable USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter (USB2-E1000) to substitute for an increasingly flaky onboard ethernet port on an aging core2duo macbook.
Given the Shairport hack that StuartUSA’s plugin is based on has a port for OS X and OS X is a UNIX-based operating system, I figured I could get the hack to work on my home server (an old 2GHz Core Duo 32-bit Macbook running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard running LMS and Plex, among other things). Released in 2011 and 2012, Mac OS X Lion and its successor OS X Mountain Lion were the last two paid software updates for the Mac. Until recently, the downloads cost $19.99, but Apple is now. This is an application, compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or higher (or Windows XP or higher), that allows you to mirror your computer’s video and audio to a second- or third-generation Apple TV. Users can mirror or cast their screen from any AirPlay or Google Cast compatible device such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android or Chromebook. Any computer running iTunes 10.2 or better is capable of AirPlay with the Apple TV. AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac mode ls: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newe r).
Having installed the drivers, and disabled IPv6, the adapter will connect to the LAN and I can access the internet and local file servers over the interface. However, Airplay will not see any clients or stream over that interface. If I re-enable my airport/wifi connection, then Airplay comes back to life and the clients are visible in iTunes (or Airfoil).

What’s the deal? How can I fix this?
